Opening May 24, 2025 | Davis Mansion, Morven Park, Leesburg, Virginia
The Museum of Hounds & Hunting North America (MHHNA) is honored to unveil Messages in Bronze, a curated exhibition celebrating the sporting art of Charles Cary Rumsey (1879–1922), opening on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at the historic Davis Mansion in Morven Park, Leesburg, Virginia. This exhibition coincides with the museum’s 40th anniversary and the annual Memorial Day Weekend events, including the Huntsman’s Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and a reception at the Davis Mansion.
Charles Cary Rumsey, an American sculptor and accomplished horseman, was renowned for his dynamic equestrian and sporting sculptures. An 8-goal polo player and three-time U.S. Open Champion, Rumsey’s deep understanding of equine anatomy and movement is vividly captured in his bronze works. His dual passions for art and sport culminated in pieces that resonate with energy and realism.
The exhibition will feature a selection of Rumsey’s most celebrated works, including The Old Virginian, a sculpture portraying a horseman accompanied by hounds, reflecting Rumsey’s affinity for foxhunting themes. This piece, donated to MHHNA in 1986, is considered one of the most important in the museum’s collection.
“Charles Cary Rumsey’s sculptures embody the spirit of the sporting life,” said John H. Head, curator at MHHNA. “His works offer a unique intersection of athleticism and artistry, making them a perfect fit for our museum’s mission to preserve and celebrate the heritage of hound and horse sports.”
